Not as a universal penalty. Google’s hours guidance links opening times to searches such as “salons open now”; it does not state a general ranking penalty outside regular hours. A profile marked “Temporarily closed” is different. Google says it can rank after open businesses for broad queries, depending on category, query type, and how many matching businesses are temporarily closed.
Does being closed for a few hours lower my Google Maps ranking?
Google’s published local-ranking and hours guidance does not say a business ranks lower whenever it is outside its regular hours. Google’s local-ranking guidance names relevance, distance, and popularity as the main factors. Its Business Profile guidance treats hours as business information that helps match searches such as “salons open now.”
Keep the normal weekly schedule accurate in the Google Business Profile. Google says owners can edit regular hours for Maps and Search so customers see current hours. A result that shows the business as closed outside those hours is therefore different from a profile marked “Temporarily closed.”
What happens when I mark my business temporarily closed?
Google displays “Temporarily closed” on the Business Profile in Google Maps and Search. For broad queries, Google says temporarily closed businesses can rank after open businesses. Google also says the effect depends on the business category, the query type, and how many matching businesses are temporarily closed.
That is a conditional result, not a single ranking rule for every search. A broad search for a type of business can behave differently from a search for one named business or a query that includes an open-now intent. Use the Google Maps optimization guide for the wider ranking context, then read a closed-status result in light of the exact query.
Should I use Special hours or Temporarily closed?
Google’s current help pages conflict at exactly seven days:
| Situation | What Google’s pages say |
|---|---|
| Closed for 1–6 days | Special hours |
| Closed for exactly 7 days | The closure page says Special hours; the opening-hours page limits Special hours to six consecutive days or fewer |
| Closed for more than 7 days | Temporarily closed |
| Closed for the off-season or indefinitely | Temporarily closed |
For a holiday or another short exception, use Special hours. For more than seven days, use Temporarily closed. At exactly seven days, Google’s published instructions disagree, so check the live Business Profile options before saving. When the business reopens, update the profile so the status and hours match the customer experience.
Can a permanently closed business still appear on Google Maps?
Yes. Google says a permanently closed Business Profile may still appear in Search and Maps when someone searches for the business, but it clearly shows that the business is closed. The listing’s appearance is not evidence that Google is treating the business as open or ranking it normally against operating businesses.
If the business reopens or was marked permanently closed by mistake, Google provides a path to reopen the profile. Start with the existing profile’s status and follow Google’s reopening instructions.
How should I interpret a ranking check while my business is closed?
Treat one observation as an observation for that query and status, not as proof of a general penalty. Google makes its documented temporary-closure effect depend on the query, category, and competing businesses. Google separately describes hours as information used for searches such as “open now.”
For a useful check, record whether the profile shows normal closed hours, Special hours, Temporarily closed, or Permanently closed. Record the exact search wording too. Compare results only after those details are clear, and remember that local results also depend on relevance, distance, and popularity.

Common questions
- Does Google Maps hide my business every time it is closed?
- No. A profile can remain visible while showing its hours or a closed status. Google says a permanently closed profile may still appear when someone searches for that business, with the closed status displayed. Temporary closure can affect broad-query ordering, but Google says the effect varies by category, query, and the number of matching businesses.
- Is “Closed” the same as “Temporarily closed” on Google Maps?
- No. A business can be closed because the current time is outside its regular or special hours. “Temporarily closed” is a separate Business Profile status. Google’s closure page says to use Special hours for seven days or less, but its opening-hours page limits Special hours to six consecutive days or fewer. The two pages conflict at exactly seven days. Google’s closure page reserves “Temporarily closed” for more than seven days, an off-season, or an indefinite closure.
- What should I update when my business reopens?
- Change the Business Profile back to the status that matches the business and confirm the regular or special hours. Google says owners can edit hours for Maps and Search, and its closure guidance provides a reopen path for a profile marked permanently closed. Check the public listing after saving so customers see the current operating information.
