Special hours

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder3 min read

Special hours are temporary changes to a business's regular hours on a Google Business Profile for holidays, special events, other exceptional circumstances, or a short closure, without changing the regular schedule.1

Use this table to choose the right hours field before editing the profile:

Hours field Use it for Boundary or distinction
Main hours The business's normal weekly schedule. This is the regular baseline for Google Maps and Search, not a temporary exception.2
Special hours A brief change to the overall schedule, such as a holiday, special event, or short closure. Google’s Special hours guidance says to use it for up to 6 consecutive days. Google’s closure guidance says 7 days or less can use Special hours, so the pages disagree about exactly 7 days. Use Temporarily closed for more than 7 consecutive days or an unknown period.13
More hours A recurring schedule for a specific service, such as delivery, takeout, drive through, pickup, or senior hours.14 It describes a service schedule, not a temporary change to the business's overall hours. Google generally says to set it as a subset of the main hours.14
Temporarily closed A closure lasting more than 7 consecutive days, or a closure with no known end date. Use this status instead of entering a longer or indefinite closure as Special hours. For exactly 7 days, check Google’s two linked instructions because they differ.13

Google puts the field at Edit profile → Hours. In the Business hours section, next to Special hours, select Edit.1 For each date, a business can enter opening and closing times, mark the day closed, or add multiple sets of hours.1 After saving, find the saved hours in the Hours tab under Business information or directly in Edit profile under Special hours.1 Special hours show on the profile only when the main hours are set to Open with main hours.1

Before you leave the editor, check each of these:

  1. For a suggested holiday date, select Review. For a custom date, select Add a date. For an existing date, select that date.1
  2. For an open date, Uncheck Closed and enter the open and closed hours. For a closure, keep Closed checked. For multiple periods, select More and then Add hours +.1
  3. Confirm official-holiday hours even when they match the regular schedule. Google says you can set holiday Special hours in advance for the dates on its holiday list.15
  4. Select Save, then verify the result in the Hours tab under Business information or under Edit profile → Special hours.1

For broader context, read understanding your Google Business Profile. If your business is closed, see does Google Maps rank me lower when my business is closed?. For the wider editing path, see how to edit or remove your Google Business Profile.

One set of Special hours cannot exceed 24 hours. If an overnight schedule crosses midnight and extends past noon the next day, split it at midnight. The next day's regular hours are then ignored, so enter any hours you want to keep for that day again as Special hours.1 The Google Business Profile hub provides the wider profile context.
