Should I use a call-tracking number on my Google Business Profile?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Yes, but only when the tracking number connects directly to the business location, stays under the business's control, and represents an authoritative business phone. Google focuses on the number's connection, destination, and control, not on whether the number is labelled for call tracking.

What does Google require from a Business Profile phone number?

Google's Guidelines for representing your business on Google say a phone number should connect to the individual business location. Google says to use a local number instead of a central call-center helpline whenever possible. The number must be under the business's direct control. A phone number or URL must not redirect or refer customers to a landing page or phone number other than one belonging to the actual business, and premium phone numbers are not acceptable.

Google's authorized-representative guidance adds that a Business Profile phone number should be the single, authoritative number for the business and verifiable by the owner. A tracking number can fit that rule when calls reach the actual business and the business can verify and manage the number. A number that routes customers to an unrelated line or landing page fails those rules. Google also says to prefer a local number over a central helpline whenever a local number is available.

Should I use the tracking number as the primary number?

Use the tracking number as the primary profile number only when it is the single, authoritative number customers should call for that location. The business owner must be able to verify and control it. If the ordinary business number remains the authoritative contact, keep that number primary instead of replacing it only to obtain attribution.

Google's Business Profile phone instructions allow one primary business phone number plus up to two additional phone numbers. The additional numbers can be mobile or landline numbers, but not fax numbers. That field limit does not make a disconnected or redirecting tracking line acceptable. Every number added should still connect to the individual business and stay under the owner's control.

Which tracking numbers fit Google's phone rules?

Tracking-number setup How to read it against Google's guidance
A number that connects directly to the individual business location and stays under the owner's control Can fit the phone rules when it is the authoritative number for that business.
A number that redirects or refers customers to another landing page or phone number Does not fit the rule. Google says the destination must be the actual business.
A number used as a central call-center helpline when a local number is available Google says to use the local number instead whenever possible.
A premium phone number Not acceptable, regardless of the rate charged to the caller.

Google also says additional phone numbers can be used on Business Profile websites and other local surfaces. That permission does not override the requirements for a real business connection, direct control, and an authoritative number.

What does Google count when someone calls from the profile?

Google's Business Profile Performance guidance defines Calls as the number of times a customer clicked the call button on the profile. The metric is a call-button click count for the selected date range. It does not establish that a call was answered, how long it lasted, or who called.

The Google Business Profile performance metrics guide explains the other profile actions and how to read them.

If the reporting question is which website or ad led to a connected call, use the separate website or advertising measurement path. Google Ads documents dynamically generated forwarding numbers for calls from a website after an ad click, which is different from the profile's native Calls metric. That method measures website calls after an ad click, not the profile button-click metric.
