What is a Google Business Profile store code, and when do I need one?
A Google Business Profile store code is a private identifier for one business location. You can make it a place name or a random number, but it must stay the same for that location. Every location needs a unique store code before a Business Profile spreadsheet import. Google uses the code to apply changes to the right location.
What is a Google Business Profile store code?
A store code identifies a specific location inside a Business Profile account. Google says the code can be a place name or a random number. It must remain the same when it refers to that location. In Google's bulk-upload spreadsheet guidance, the same field is called a business code, and each business row needs one.
Google's store-code guidance uses the code to apply spreadsheet changes to the right location. It is not the name customers see on Google. A store code can look like ACME01 or 18427, provided it follows Google's format rules.
Can customers see my store code?
No. Google says store codes are not shown on Google and can be found by people who manage the location's profile. The public business name is a separate field. Google's spreadsheet guidance says the business name is what shows on Google and should match how the business is represented offline.
This distinction matters when you manage several locations. Use the business name for the customer-facing identity. Use a store code to tell locations apart in your own account and in bulk-upload files. If another person helps with daily profile work, give that person the appropriate owner or manager access, rather than treating the store code as an access credential.
When do I need a unique store code?
You need a unique store code for each location before importing a spreadsheet of Business Profile locations. Google says that uniqueness makes changes apply accurately to each location when you import a new spreadsheet. Its bulk-upload spreadsheet instructions also say that a business code is required for each business in the spreadsheet.
| Situation | What the store code does | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You import several locations by spreadsheet | Identifies the location that each row refers to | Give every location a different code before importing. |
| You manage one location directly in its Business Profile | Gives the location an internal identifier | Add or change the code in the Business Profile when needed. |
| You keep separate spreadsheets for different brands or accounts | Helps you recognize which file a code belongs to | Include the brand name in the code, such as ACME1 or ACME2. |
Google says store codes can be added or changed in the Business Profile at any time. The spreadsheet requirement is the important trigger: if a bulk import contains locations, each location needs its own unique code.
What rules apply to a Business Profile store code?
For a business code in a bulk-upload spreadsheet, Google says the code must meet four rules:
- It must be different for each business.
- It must be no longer than 64 characters.
- It must not have extra spaces before or after it.
- It must not contain special characters such as angle brackets or a URL.
Google recommends putting the brand name in a store code when separate business or personal accounts use separate spreadsheets. That convention makes codes easier to recognize, but the code still needs to be unique for each business in the relevant account.
Can I change a store code in a bulk spreadsheet?
Use a bulk spreadsheet to add a store code only while adding a new location. Google warns that adding or changing a store code for an existing location through a bulk spreadsheet creates a duplicate location.
If an existing location needs a different code, change it in the Business Profile itself. If the business moves to a new location, Google's spreadsheet guidance says to replace the old code with a new one. Check the location record before importing so the code follows Google's uniqueness and formatting rules.
The Google Business Profile hub covers the profile fields that customers see. A store code belongs to the management side of the profile, especially when the account uses bulk spreadsheets for multiple locations.
