Why do Google Business Profile attributes change when I change category?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Google Business Profile attributes change after a category change because Google makes attribute availability depend on the profile's primary category and country. A new category can expose different category-specific features and service suggestions, while some attributes are owner-editable and others can be populated from customer input. The change can affect what appears on Search and Maps, but a missing attribute alone does not tell you that Google applied a ranking penalty.

Why does the category change the available attributes?

Google's Business Profile API says the available attribute list is returned for a location with a given primary category and country. That makes the category and country inputs to the attribute list, not just labels on the profile. Google's category guidance also says categories tell customers what a business does, connect the profile with searches for its products or services, and affect local ranking. Read the category choice answer when deciding which category describes what the business is.

Check What it controls
Primary category The category-dependent set of attributes Google can make available for the location.
Country The country-dependent availability of attributes for that category.
Category-specific features The profile features Google may show for that type of business.

For a technical lookup, Google's attributes.list method uses the primary category's stable ID and an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code. An owner does not need the API to make a normal profile edit, but the documented inputs explain why two otherwise similar profiles can show different fields.

What can change besides the attribute list?

Google says a Business Profile can expose special features based on its category. Its examples include class ratings and amenities for hotels, online ordering, reservations, menus and menu items for restaurants, and booking buttons and service lists for health and beauty businesses.

Services can change with the same business-type logic. Google says some businesses receive suggested services tailored to their category, and Google's service API documentation says predefined services can differ by category and country and can change at any time. Check publishing products and services on your Google Business Profile for the separate service-field workflow.

What you notice What to inspect
An attribute is available or no longer listed The primary category and country, then whether the field is owner-editable.
A category-specific action appears or disappears The features Google makes available to that category.
Suggested services change The category, country and whether the profile is eligible to edit services.
The wording of a field changes The current attribute name. Google says attribute names can change over time.

Why did an attribute disappear after I changed category?

An attribute can disappear from the edit view because Google limits some attributes to particular locations, countries or business categories. The name can also change as Google updates its attribute labels. A field that is not in the owner edit view is different from an edit that is still under review, so check both availability and status before deciding what happened.

Google also says owners can directly edit some attributes, while other attributes may be populated from input by customers who visit the business. Customer-populated fields are therefore not controlled in the same way as an owner-edited field. Attributes appear on the profile in Search, Maps and other Google platforms, and adding certain attributes might help the business appear in searches for places with those attributes. Google's attribute guidance describes these distinctions.

How should I check my profile after changing category?

Use this sequence after saving a category change:

  1. Confirm the category. Open Business Profile → Edit profile → Business category → Edit, choose the offered category, and select Save. The Google Business Profile category guide covers the category decision. Google says an added or edited category might trigger another verification request.
  2. Review the attribute list. Record which fields are available for the new category and country. Separate fields you can edit from fields that may be populated by customers.
  3. Review category-specific features. Look for the actions and profile sections Google makes available to the new business type.
  4. Review services. Check whether the suggested services still describe the business. Google says not every business can add services; service eligibility is represented in the API by the canModifyServiceList metadata state.
  5. Check the edit status. Google says an attribute edit usually takes about 10 minutes to review, but a review can sometimes take up to 30 days. Keep the pending state in mind when an edit has not appeared yet.
  6. Inspect Search and Maps. Confirm that the public profile describes the real business and that the category, attributes and services still match what customers can expect.

Does a missing attribute mean my local ranking dropped?

A missing attribute alone does not identify the cause of a ranking change. Google says categories affect local ranking, and its local-ranking guidance says complete and accurate business information is more likely to appear in relevant local searches. The same guidance says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Google separately says adding certain attributes might make a business show up in searches for places with those attributes.

Treat the missing field as a profile-state check first: confirm that the new category and country make the field available, identify whether the field is owner-edited or customer-populated, and check whether Google is still reviewing an edit. Then assess the profile's visibility with the category and the rest of the information held to the same accuracy standard.

What should I record in a before-and-after checklist?

Keep a short record of the profile state before and after the category edit. It makes a later change easier to explain and prevents a pending review from being mistaken for a permanent removal.

Before and after check Record
Category The old and new primary category, including the date saved.
Country and location The country and location represented by the profile.
Attributes Which fields were available, editable, customer-populated or absent.
Features Any category-specific actions or sections shown on the profile.
Services Suggested services, custom services and whether the service list could be edited.
Verification Whether Google requested another verification after the category edit.
Review status When each attribute edit was submitted and whether it is pending, approved or rejected.
Public surfaces What customers can see on Search and Maps after the change is processed.

Common questions

Can customers change some Google Business Profile attributes?
Yes. Google says owners can directly edit some attributes, while other attributes may be populated from input by customers who visit the business. A customer-populated attribute does not follow the same owner-edit path as an attribute you can change directly.
How long does Google take to review an attribute edit?
Google says an attribute edit usually takes about 10 minutes to review, but a review can sometimes take up to 30 days. Check the profile again after the edit is submitted, and keep the submission date in your record.
Can changing category change the services Google suggests?
Yes. Google says suggested services can be tailored to the business type, and its API documentation says predefined services can differ by category and country and change at any time. Not every business is eligible to add services.
