Google describes AI Mode as its most powerful AI search experience. It can explore a topic across web sources and use query fan-out to divide a complex question into subtopics, search across multiple data sources, and combine the results into a response. Google also warns that AI Mode may be wrong or may return web links instead when it does not have enough confidence in an AI response.1,2
AI Overviews are AI-generated snapshots in Google Search that provide key information and links when Google’s systems determine that generative AI may help. AI Mode is the deeper, interactive experience: a person can continue with follow-up questions, explore a topic across sources, and ask a multi-part question that might otherwise take several searches.1,3,2
For example, a person can start with an AI Overview, select Show more, and use the Ask anything bar to continue in AI Mode on supported mobile devices, regions, and languages. Google says the original search context carries over, so the person does not have to start again.3
Google’s local-ranking guidance says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. That guidance does not identify AI Mode or AI Overviews as Google Business Profile ranking metrics, so these terms describe Search experiences rather than a Business Profile score.4 Neither feature is a promise of inclusion for a business. Maps Agent makes no promise that a business will appear in AI Mode or AI Overviews. For measurement context, see how local businesses measure AI Overview visibility and clicks; for the nearby Maps term, see Ask Maps.
