Ask Maps
Ask Maps is Google's conversational experience in Google Maps for questions about real-world places and destinations, returning recommendations, answers, and destination details while allowing follow-up questions.12
Google introduced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026. On Android, Google's documented interaction is direct: open Google Maps, tap Ask Maps below the search bar, type or say a question, send it, and continue with follow-ups.12 Ask Maps sits within the broader AI search landscape, but it is a Google Maps experience rather than a general-purpose chatbot. Google is the source for this term here: its Maps Help pages and product announcements document the feature.
Google says Ask Maps can personalize recommendations from a user's Maps activity. When Personalized Recommendations is enabled, Maps may use things searched for and places the user got directions to if Maps history is being saved. Past Ask Maps conversations may also inform responses when Maps history is being saved. Google also lists saved lists or labels, posted reviews, ratings and photos, Search history, and connected Google content apps as possible inputs. The list does not mean every response uses every item.3
Google's March 12 announcement described the initial Ask Maps rollout in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS. Google's August 6 update says Ask Maps is also rolling out in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and over 150 countries and territories in English. The live transit widget, more personalized responses, and past-conversation memory are rolling out now everywhere Ask Maps is available. Food ordering, discovering hotels and events, and conversational contributions are rolling out in the U.S., with more countries to come over time.14
For a local business owner, consider a storefront that has changed its hours. Google says a person can upload a photo of the storefront sign in Ask Maps or the Contribute tab. Maps can detect the new hours and ask for confirmation before submitting the suggestion. Maps' built-in protection systems then review suggested edits for accuracy and will not post suggestions that violate Google's policies. The practical inference is that the photo can support a proposed update to the place record. It is not evidence of a ranking, inclusion, recommendation, or customer outcome.4
Ask Maps has three nearby surfaces, but they answer different jobs. Gemini in Navigation is the hands-free, conversational driving experience for finding places along a route, checking EV chargers, sharing an ETA, or reporting traffic disruptions.5 AI Overviews is an AI-generated snapshot with links in Google Search when Google's systems decide generative AI may help.6 Ordinary Maps search starts with an address, place name, or category and returns map pins and place details such as hours, phone number, website, ratings, and reviews.7 Ask Maps is the conversational question-and-recommendation experience inside Google Maps. None of these descriptions guarantees a ranking or inclusion outcome for a business. Google Maps optimization is the relevant guide for keeping a place's public information clear and current.
Third-party actions have a narrower boundary. Google says the user must be at least 18, be in the U.S., and be signed in to Google Maps with a Google Account. These actions are available only in English and in the Ask Maps mobile app or web app at maps.google.com. History improves continuity, but it is not required to access Ask Maps. Without it, the user cannot pick up where they left off with previous searches. AI responses may include mistakes, and third-party app availability varies by location, language, and device. For food orders, Google does not handle the order. The third party is the merchant, handles payment, and handles order status, changes, and issue resolution.8
Ask Maps does not replace checking important information. Google warns that AI-powered answers can be incorrect. Check the supporting links and other Search results before relying on an important answer.86
