The phrase is an industry label in the sources below. The Google Business Profile Help pages cited here document related services and review snippets rather than defining the phrase. Search Engine Land describes justifications as bonus text that can enhance listings on those local surfaces, and BrightLocal says the type shown depends on the search.1,2 A justification explains why a listing may fit a particular query. The Google Map Pack page covers the broader local-results surface.
Google documents profile content that can supply this context:
| Evidence shown with a local listing | What Google documents |
|---|---|
| A service | When a local customer searches for an offering a business provides, that service may be highlighted on the Business Profile. Google also says the Google Maps app can show the full menu under Services. The services guide explains the underlying profile feature.3 |
| A review snippet | Review snippets show keywords most mentioned in quotes from Google reviewers and are selected by an algorithm. Some may be created by Place Topics, and snippets can vary by device, platform, language, or location. The Google reviews explanation covers the review surface.4 |
For the query “gluten free pizza near me,” Search Engine Land describes a likely review justification that uses wording from a Google Business Profile review which closely or exactly matches the query language. That is a sourced query-to-snippet example, not a guaranteed result for every search or listing.5
A justification is not proof that the detail caused the profile to rank. Google's local-ranking guidance names relevance, distance, and popularity as the main considerations, keeps the full algorithm confidential, and says payment cannot buy a better local position.6 BrightLocal says the content used in a justification generally does not explain why a listing ranks, while identifying website mentions as a separate exception in its discussion. That exception does not turn a service or review justification into a ranking rule.2
The term also does not mean a guaranteed display. Search Engine Land says that not every listing in a result set features a justification, so a visible justification is an observed display, not a guaranteed one.1 Here, local search justification means text attached to a local listing on the local pack, Local Finder, or Maps surfaces. It is not a generic name for every snippet in an ordinary web result.1
BrightLocal and Search Engine Land document the phrase as an industry label; Google's own pages document the service highlights and review snippets that can appear on the relevant local surfaces.1,2,3,4
