Service-area business

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder3 min read

A service-area business is a business that visits or delivers to customers directly but does not serve customers at its business address, as defined by Google for Google Business Profile.

Customers see the Service areas list on the profile. When a service-area business does not serve customers at its address, Google says to remove or hide that address, so the profile shows the service area and no business address.12 A hybrid business can show both its address and its service area.1 For the longer setup procedure, see the guide to setting up Google Business Profile service areas; the Google Business Profile hub covers the profile itself.

Business type Shows address? Sets a service area? Signage and staffing requirement Example
Storefront Yes, for a location customers can visit.2 Not as the defining arrangement. A business that shows its address should maintain permanent fixed signage with its business name at that address.2 A business that serves customers at its physical location.2
Hybrid Yes, if it serves customers at the address.1 Yes.1 The location should have permanent signage, be staffed by the business team, and be able to receive customers during its stated hours.2 Without permanent on-site signage, Google says it is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business.1 A dine-in restaurant that delivers, or an auto repair shop with a repair garage and roadside service.12
Service-area business No, when it does not serve customers at its address. Remove or hide the address.12 Yes.1 It visits or delivers to customers instead of serving them at the listed address. A business without a storefront with clear signage may use one service-area Business Profile.2 A cleaning service or plumber that visits customers.1

Profile count: Google's guidance contains a real tension. The service-area help says one service-area business profile covers the whole area served.1 The representation guidelines allow one profile per location when different locations have separate service areas and separate staff.2 That is not blanket permission to create duplicate profiles. For multiple locations, separate staff at each location is one of the practical conditions Google names.2

Central office and virtual office: Google says a service-area business should use one profile for its central office or location. A virtual office can be listed only if it is staffed during business hours; a rented mailing address where the business does not operate is not eligible for a Business Profile.2

Service-area rules: Google allows up to 20 service areas on one Business Profile, selected from cities, postal codes, or other area types.1 A service area cannot be set as a radius. A legacy radius area cannot be edited, so the business must specify the area using a supported area type instead.1 The overall boundary should generally be within about 2 hours of driving time from the business base, although larger areas may be appropriate for some businesses.12 Approved edits may take up to 48 hours to appear.1 Removing all service areas requires a storefront with its business address in the profile.1

What the term does not cover: Calling a business a service-area business does not make every business that travels to customers eligible for a Google Business Profile. Google's representation rules still apply. Businesses associated with products or services that require a minimum customer age, such as alcohol, cannabis, or weapons, need a storefront and cannot operate as service-area businesses without one.12
