Troubleshooting

Why was my Google Business Profile edit rejected, pending, or changed back?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder10 min read

First record the exact status, field, submitted value, and submission time. Then compare the owner view with the public profile and look for Google's blue update text and notification. Google says a pending edit usually takes 10 minutes to review, but it can take up to 30 days.1 A rejected edit appears as Not approved.1 A value that seems to have changed back may instead be a Google update, a suggested edit, or a bulk-upload result.2

First, check which outcome you actually have

The status label and the public value tell you which branch to follow. Do not treat a value that looks wrong as proof that Google rejected your edit.

What you see What it means What to do next
Accepted and the new value displays on the profile Google defines the accepted state as the updated information displaying on the Business Profile.1 Compare the displayed value with the public profile. If they differ, check for a Google update.
Pending The edit is still under review.1 Save the status, field, submitted value, and time. Allow Google's documented review window.
Not approved Google might not be able to confirm the accuracy of the change.1 Check verification, policy, and real-world business information before using the appeal route.
The old value appears after an accepted edit, with blue text or a notification The profile may show a Google update from another source.12 Capture the current value, blue text, notification, and field before editing again.
A suggested edit notification asks for a response Google may publish the suggestion after the response window if public information supports it.2 Accept or reject the suggestion within 4 days when Google asks for your review.
A managed profile changed after a bulk upload The upload rules may have replaced a changed field or allowed an automatic update for a blank field.2 Compare the current upload with the previous one, including blank fields.

The table is a diagnostic sequence, not a ranking of causes.

Is the edit still pending?

Pending means Google is still reviewing the edit, not that Google has rejected it.1 Google says review usually takes 10 minutes and sometimes takes up to 30 days.1 See the Google Business Profile workflow time windows page for this edit window alongside the separate ownership, appeal, and new-owner limits.

Before changing the field again, save:

  1. The exact Pending label.
  2. The field you changed.
  3. The submitted value.
  4. The time shown by the editor.

Use the documented window as the first boundary. The saved form is not the same as a live change because Google reviews changes before updating them on the profile.3 For the mechanics of submitting a field, see editing and removing your Google Business Profile.

For a business-name edit, compare the submitted name with the name customers can verify in the real world while you wait.3 Do not submit a second version just because the first one is still Pending.

Does “Not approved” mean the edit was rejected?

Yes, “Not approved” is Google's status for an edit it did not approve. Google says it might not approve a change when it cannot confirm its accuracy, and an appeal might be available.1

Check the cheapest observable causes first:

  • Check the profile's verification state. Google says an unverified profile can still edit some information, but verification is required to edit all profile information.14
  • Compare the proposed name, address, phone, website, or category with the business's real-world information. Google says the business name should match how the business is known in the real world, the address should be accurate, and the phone and website should represent the individual business location.5
  • Check whether the submitted content is already live, already edited, or already deleted, or whether the profile is unverified. Google lists these as possible reasons content may fail to publish or an appeal may be rejected.6

For businesses outside the UK and European Economic Area, Google directs businesses to contact support to appeal rejected name, category, address, phone, or website edits. Appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days. Do not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before a decision.7

How do I check a rejected business-name edit?

Compare the submitted name with the business name used consistently in the real world before you appeal. Google says the name should match the business's storefront, website, stationery, and the name customers know.5

Check the submitted value character by character against that evidence. Remove marketing taglines, location or service terms, hours, phone numbers, URLs, and other unnecessary additions. Special characters or legal terms such as LLC, LTD, or INC need consistent real-world proof, such as signage, business cards, or invoices.5 If the name is supported, collect official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, or a business utility bill. Google says the business name and address on the documents should match the Business Profile.7

For a US business with Not approved, open Google's Contact us form, select the most related issue, complete it once, and submit it. Google says businesses outside the UK and EEA use this route for rejected business-information edits, including name edits. Do not create a second Business Profile for the same business while the appeal is pending.7

Did Google change the value after the edit was accepted?

A changed-back-looking value is a separate observation from a rejected edit. Check Google's update signals before submitting the same change again.

Google says it gathers information from sources such as user reports and licensed content. In the profile editor, blue text identifies information changed by Google, and a notification appears at the top when the profile has Google updates.2

Capture the current value, the blue text, the notification, and the affected field. Then compare the current value with the business's public information. The existing guide on why Google Business Profile information keeps changing covers the broader update problem. Before submitting the same change again, use the status and update signals above to identify the branch.

Did Google notify you about a suggested edit?

A suggested edit that requires review gives you 4 days to accept or reject it. If you do not respond within 4 days, Google may publish it automatically when other public information, such as the business website, supports it.2

Check the email or in-product notification and record the proposed value. If the value is already live, compare it with the public information before deciding whether to update the profile directly. Google also says it may apply some suggested user edits without prior review when needed to meet policy guidelines.2

Did a bulk upload change the field?

Bulk-upload behavior is a separate branch from a manual edit rejection. Google says an unchanged field is ignored, a changed field replaces the previous and updated information, and a blank field can allow an automatic update.2

Compare the current upload with the previous upload. Mark every changed field and every blank field. Do not apply this rule to a manual edit unless the profile is actually managed through bulk uploads.

Could verification be blocking the edit?

A verification prompt can explain why an edit cannot proceed, but not every rejected edit is a verification problem. Google says an unverified profile can still edit some information, but it must be verified to edit all information.1 Google automatically determines which verification methods are available.4

Check for Get verified.4 If the button appears again after a verification attempt, Google says it could not completely verify the business. Google also says recently updated details can trigger a request for more information or re-verification. Verification reviews take up to 5 business days, although rare reviews may take longer.4

Follow the method Google presents. You cannot choose or change the available verification method yourself.4 For the full verification path, see verifying your Google Business Profile.

What does “Get verified” mean after a business-name change?

A renewed “Get verified” prompt means Google could not completely verify the business; it is not the same status as “Pending” or “Not approved.”4 Google says a verified business-name change might require verification again, and recently updated business details can trigger a request for more information or re-verification.34 Select Get verified and follow the method Google presents. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days, although rare reviews may take longer.4

What evidence should I save before the next action?

Save evidence that identifies the state, the field, and the value before you appeal or edit again. The record lets you separate a review delay from a policy problem or a Google-applied update.

Branch Evidence to save
Status The exact Accepted, Pending, or Not approved label, the changed field, the submitted value, and the editor's time.1
Google update The current profile value, any blue text, the notification at the top of the profile, and the relevant field.
Verification Whether the profile is verified, whether Get verified has reappeared, and the re-verification request.4
Appeal The profile and status, plus matching official business registration, license, tax, or utility evidence when Google requests supporting material.
Bulk upload The previous and current upload, with changed and blank fields marked.

For an appeal, Google says the business name and address on submitted documents should match the Business Profile. The appeal page lists official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and business utility bills as examples of evidence.7

What should I do when none of these checks explains it?

Keep the exact status and wait only for the process that applies to it. Do not use the longest published wait as a diagnosis for every problem.

  1. For Pending, allow the edit review period, which Google says is usually 10 minutes and can be up to 30 days.1
  2. For Not approved, check the field against verification and representation rules, then use the appeal route if Google makes it available.17
  3. For an accepted value that differs from the current profile, check blue text and the Google-update notification.2
  4. For a verification prompt, follow the method Google presents and allow up to 5 business days for the review.4

If you appeal, submit one complete appeal and wait for the decision. Google says appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days and warns against submitting multiple appeals for the same issue before a decision.7

Common questions

Is “changed back” an official Google edit status?
“Changed back” describes what the owner sees, not a Google edit status. Google's documented edit states include Accepted, Pending, and Not approved. Check for a separate Google update signal before treating the change as a rejected edit.
How long should a pending edit take?
Google says a pending edit usually takes 10 minutes to review, but sometimes takes up to 30 days. Save the timestamp so you know which wait applies to the edit you submitted.
How long does an appeal take?
Google says appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days. Do not send another appeal for the same issue while the first one is waiting.
Why did the profile ask me to verify again after I changed information?
Google says a reappearing Get verified button means the business could not be completely verified. Google also says recently updated details may prompt a request for more information or re-verification.
