What is Profile Strength and does filling it out do anything?
Google's Profile Strength Indicator is a checklist for a verified Google Business Profile. It points to missing information, consistency across Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Shopping, and content such as photos, videos, and posts. Updating the applicable items can make the profile more complete and accurate. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show in local results, but it does not promise a particular ranking position or customer result from completing the indicator.
What does Google Profile Strength check?
Google's Profile Strength guide lists three kinds of profile work: finding missing information, keeping the profile consistent across Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Shopping, and adding content such as photos, videos, and posts. The missing information examples are the business description, hours of operation, and contact information.
Treat the indicator as a completion checklist, not as a public ranking grade. Complete the prompts that apply to the business, then make sure each answer is accurate and current. The Google Business Profile hub explains the profile's other fields and controls.
Where do I find Profile Strength?
Google says the Profile Strength Indicator is available only for verified listings. To open it, go to your Business Profile, click Profile Strength, and follow the on-screen instructions.
The path is:
- Go to your Business Profile.
- Click Profile Strength.
- Follow the instructions to complete the profile.
- After updating the profile, click Next. Click Skip to move to the next screen when that option is offered.
- Click Go to profile on the last screen.
If Profile Strength does not appear, check verification first: Google's guide says only verified listings can show the indicator.
Should I fill out every Profile Strength prompt?
Fill out the prompts that describe the real business, using complete and accurate information. Google says complete information helps customers know what the business does, where it is, and when they can visit. Its local-ranking guidance names a full address where customers can visit, business hours, the business category, and details such as parking or Wi-Fi as useful profile information.
| Profile Strength prompt | What to check before saving |
|---|---|
| Business description | The description explains the real business clearly. |
| Hours of operation | Regular and special hours match when customers can visit or receive service. |
| Contact information | The contact details are current and belong to the business. |
| Profile consistency | The core profile information stays consistent across Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Shopping. |
| Photos, videos, and posts | The content represents the business and is appropriate to add to its profile. |
The indicator names examples rather than promising that every profile field will appear as a prompt. Use the profile itself as the final review, especially after a business changes its hours, location, category, or contact details.
Does Profile Strength improve local ranking?
Completing the applicable Profile Strength prompts can leave the profile more complete and accurate. Google's local-ranking guide says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show in local search results, while inaccurate information might keep a profile from showing for relevant searches in its area.
That wording is probabilistic. Google does not say that completing the Profile Strength Indicator produces a fixed ranking change, a better position, or more customers. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. What should I do after completing Profile Strength?
Review the finished profile as a customer would. Check that the business description, hours, contact details, category, location information, and added media describe the business accurately. Then use Google's Business Profile performance report to watch actual views, searches, and customer interactions over time. The broader Google Business Profile explanation covers how the profile represents the business beyond this checklist.
Profile Strength answers the question "what information still needs attention?" It does not answer "where does the profile rank?" or "how many customers will it bring?" Those are separate questions with no guaranteed outcome from completing the checklist.
