Local SEO for landscapers: what changes

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder4 min read

A landscaping or lawn-care business that visits customers without serving them at its base is a service-area business: use one profile, named service areas, and no public address; a customer-facing base is a hybrid.1

The general method is in the core answer and is not repeated here.

What is different for a landscaping or lawn-care business?

For a crew that visits customers and does not serve them at its base, Google defines the business as a service-area business. It can have one Business Profile for the whole area it serves, and Google says to remove the address when customers are not served there. A business that receives customers at its address and also travels is a hybrid business. It can show both the address and service area. Without permanent on-site signage, Google says the business is not eligible as a storefront and should use the service-area model.1

Profile decision What to enter for a landscaping business
Service area In the profile, select Edit profile → Location → Service area → Edit, then name the cities, postal codes, or other areas actually served. Do not draw a radius. Google allows up to 20 service areas, says the overall boundary should be no more than about two hours of driving time from the base, and says an approved edit may take up to 48 hours to appear.1
Primary category Choose the most specific category in the live picker that best describes the business. Google does not allow a custom category. A third-party list marked last updated May 9, 2026 prints “Landscape designer,” “Landscaper,” “Lawn care service,” and “Tree service,” but those are only candidates until the current picker confirms them.23
Additional categories Add a few categories for real services or departments. Do not add one category for every service. An independently owned, public-facing department should have its own profile.2
Seasonal availability Set regular hours during the open season. Use special hours for brief changes or closures of up to six consecutive days. Use More hours when particular services have different times. Mark the profile temporarily closed for a closure of seven or more days, or for an unknown period.45

The category editor is Business Profile → Edit profile → Business category → Edit. Enter a category and select the option Google shows. Google warns that adding or editing a category might require reverification, so make the category describe the business's actual work before saving it.2

Seasonality belongs in the profile's supported operating fields. During the open season, describe the actual services available, set the customer-facing hours, and use special hours for holidays or short closures. Google also allows a business description to say that the business is open only during a specific seasonal period. When the business reopens, set regular hours again.4 For a landscaping company, that can mean keeping spring cleanup, lawn maintenance, planting, or snow service in the services editor only when the company really offers that work.

Eligible service businesses can use Google's services editor to choose suggested services or add custom ones, group services into categories, and add descriptions or prices. Custom service names should not contain prices or phone numbers, and Google says prohibited custom services may be rejected.6 This is where a lawn-care company can separate recurring mowing, weed control, seeding, or landscape installation from services it does not perform.

Photos should document the work customers can actually hire. Google recommends category-specific photos and says Photos at work should include at least three representative images of the services offered, including the team providing different services and specialty services delivered. Photos should be in focus, well lit, minimally altered, and representative of reality.7 Use photographs from real jobs rather than stock images, and keep the set current when the company's service mix changes.

In the United States, Google's Local Services Ads page, read September 28, 2026, lists Landscaper, Lawn care, and Tree services among home services eligible for a Google Verified badge.8 Google's US screening page describes landscaping as designing, installing, and maintaining gardens and landscapes; lawn care as lawn installation and maintenance such as weed control, mowing, and seeding; and tree service as planting, removing, and maintaining trees.9 Treat that list as current US eligibility information to check before applying, not as a promise that an ad or profile will appear in a particular position.
