Google defines the term through the Performance report, not through one universal score. The report can include views, searches, and actions from organic Search results and Google Ads. It uses a selected date range, and only metrics that apply to the business appear. Performance data is available only for verified profiles, and the owner or manager must be signed in to the Google Account associated with the profile.1
To open the report in Google Search, go to the Google Business Profile, click Performance, select a time period, and click Apply. In the Google Maps app, open Business, tap See more beside Performance, select a time period, and tap Apply.1
The useful unit is each metric's definition and selected date window. For Views and any rate you calculate yourself, keep the counting denominator with the value:
| Metric | What Google counts | Boundary to keep with the value |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Unique visitors who viewed the Business Profile on Search and Maps | A person is counted at most once per day, while a user can be counted a limited number of times across devices and platforms. The metric counts profile views, not every view of the business on Google.1 |
| Searches | Search terms people used to find the business | The metric updates at the start of each month and may take up to five days to appear. A query appears when the profile appears for that search, and you cannot directly manage these queries.1 |
| Calls | Clicks on the profile's call button | The value counts clicks on the call button.1 |
| Website clicks | Clicks on the profile's website link | The value counts clicks on the website link.1 |
| Directions | People asking for directions | Google adjusts the count for multiple taps, cancellations, and spam.1 |
| Bookings | Bookings people completed | The booking must be managed through a booking provider for this metric to have data.1 |

The owner-facing report and the technical API need separate readings. In the owner-facing report, Google counts Messages as different conversations.1 In Google's current DailyMetric API reference, BUSINESS_CONVERSATIONS means the number of message conversations received on the Business Profile, and Google marks it deprecated. MESSAGING_CLICKS means the number of times the Business Profile messaging button was clicked, with WhatsApp as an example.2 A MESSAGING_CLICKS value is therefore a button-click count, not a conversation count, reply count, response rate, or measure of message content. Other cards have their own scope: Booking clicks only for hotels, Products as views of products sold at the profile's location rather than online products, Menus per user per day, and Offers as views and clicks. Do not combine those cards as if they measured the same action.1,2
For example, if a 30-day report shows 200 Views, 9 Calls, and 4 Website clicks, the faithful reading is 200 profile-view counts under Google's view rule, 9 call-button clicks, and 4 website-link clicks. The arithmetic 4 ÷ 200 = 2% is a derived click-to-view ratio, not one of Google's named performance metrics or a measure of local position.1,3
Google Business Profile performance is not a rank-tracking report. Performance describes profile discovery and actions over a selected period. Google's Searches metric tells you that a profile appeared for a search term, while Google's performance page links to separate local-ranking guidance.1
The Google Business Profile performance metrics answer expands the metric reading, while the Google Maps optimization guide covers the broader profile context. The Performance API is another technical surface: Google documents daily and monthly metrics, with daily impression types split across Search and Maps and desktop and mobile. Its daily impression definitions count repeated displays by one unique user as one impression per day.4,2
Google owns the term's product definition and metric rules. Google Business Profile Help documents the owner-facing report and its counting rules; Google Business Profile APIs document the technical metric names and time series.1,4,2
