Glossary
Google Business Profile product editor
The Google Business Profile product editor is Google's manual surface for a local store to add physical goods to its Business Profile, especially products without barcodes, so those items can appear on the profile in Google Search.
Google says the Product Editor suits a local store selling physical goods when one or more of these conditions apply: the store has no website where customers can buy online, its products have no barcodes, or it has no fresh stock-availability data.1 Those are alternative criteria, not a requirement to meet all three.
To use the manual route, sign in with the Google Account that manages the Google Business Profile, open the relevant profile in Google Search, choose Edit products, complete the form, and select Publish.1 If a Merchant Center account is linked, Edit products can instead lead to Merchant Center management; a manager without access can request access to that account.1
The Product Editor is separate from Google's automatic in-store inventory route. Google documents that route for merchants in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, or Australia who have a physical store, a wired barcode scanner or compatible point-of-sale system, manufacturer UPC/EAN barcodes, a verified profile, and an eligible vertical. The Local Inventory app can sync point-of-sale products, and delivery partners can supply in-store inventory.2 If a business signs up for automatic product additions, Google says those additions replace manually uploaded products, although the manual contributions remain stored until more automatic products are added.2
Both routes must follow Google's Shopping Ads Policy. Google lists regulated content such as alcohol, tobacco products, gambling, financial services, pharmaceuticals and unapproved supplements, and health or medical devices as disallowed. Policy violations can remove the entire product catalog, including items that did not violate the policy themselves.3 Product data that fails Google's specifications or Shopping-policy requirements can also receive warnings, disapprovals, limited visibility, or suspension.4
The Product Editor is for physical goods, not every offer a business makes. Google directs dining establishments to the menu editor, service businesses to the Services editor, and businesses selling experiences to ticket or activity details.1 That separates products from services and menus: use Product Editor for physical goods, the Services editor for services, and the menu editor for a dining establishment's offerings.1 A neighborhood furniture store with no barcodes and no online checkout is an illustrative example of the manual route. A verified store with barcoded stock and a compatible point-of-sale system would instead check the automatic route's conditions.2
