Duplicate Google Business Profile listing
A duplicate Google Business Profile listing is a second Business Profile for the same business, and Google says a profile it considers a duplicate will not show on Google Search or Maps.1
Google says a business can have only one Business Profile. Its duplicate guidance lists an existing verified profile for the same business, multiple profiles at the same address, and multiple profiles for the same business offering different services as reasons a profile may be considered duplicate. These are examples of duplicate situations, not a rule that every profile at a shared address is duplicate.1
| Situation | Google’s distinction and visibility consequence |
|---|---|
| The same business has a second profile | This is the duplicate case. The profile Google considers duplicate will not show on Google Search or Maps.1 |
| Different eligible businesses share an address | Each business may have its own profile, so both distinct businesses can appear separately, when the businesses have different names, clearly visible differences in signage, and eligibility for a Business Profile. A shared address alone does not make the profiles duplicates.1 |
| An individual practitioner works at the location | Google allows a separate practitioner profile when the professional is public-facing, typically has their own customer base, and can be contacted directly at the verified location during stated hours. Google says the practitioner should not create one profile for every specialization. When several public-facing practitioners share a location, the organization gets a separate location profile and the practitioner profile uses only the practitioner’s name, so the two eligible profiles are not duplicates simply because they share an address. See practitioner listing.2 |
| The business moved | Google says to update the existing profile with the new address instead of creating a new Business Profile for the new location. The visibility consequence is that the existing profile is the one Google directs the business to keep updating, not a second profile for the new location.1 |
Google's help pages use “duplicate profile” for this case. “Duplicate Google Business Profile listing” is plain-language shorthand for a duplicate Business Profile. When two profiles represent the same business, the answer on merging duplicate Google Business Profiles covers the repair path.
Google publishes the product term and the one-profile rule in its Business Profile guidance. The distinctions above come from Google’s duplicate-profile and business-representation guidance.1,2
