EXIF is an abbreviation of “Exchange image file format,” which CIPA/JEITA uses as the general term for the standard and earlier versions. The CIPA/JEITA Exif 2.3 specification defines GPS fields for latitude and longitude. A photo taken at a job site could therefore contain the site's coordinates inside the file before upload. That location data is stored as metadata alongside the image data.1

EXIF geotagging is different from the photo standards Google publishes for Business Profile photos. Google's guidance lists JPG or PNG format, a file size from 10 KB to 5 MB, a recommended resolution of 720 × 720 pixels, a minimum resolution of 250 × 250 pixels, and quality requirements such as focus, lighting, no significant alterations or excessive use of filters, and representing reality.23 Those documents set standards for file format, size, resolution, visible quality, and faithful representation. They do not list embedded GPS data as a Business Profile photo standard.

Google Search Central describes embedded IPTC metadata and structured data in a separate Google Images context, where image details such as creator, permitted use, and credit information can support enhancements such as the Licensable badge.4

EXIF geotagging names embedded location metadata, not the broader question of whether Google Maps rankings change. That question belongs in the answer about geotagging and Google Maps ranking. CIPA/JEITA is the source for the Exif format and its GPS fields. Google's Business Profile photo guidance does not define a term called “EXIF geotagging.” The phrase is a descriptive trade label, so this definition is Maps Agent's, written against the documentation above.5 Related terms are collected in the Maps Agent glossary.
