Google’s Business Profile Help defines the cover photo as a photo set at the top of the profile and cautions that, in some instances, selecting one does not guarantee that it will show as the first image.1 Google lists the cover photo separately from the logo, which helps customers recognize the business, and from business photos, which highlight features of the business to attract and inform customers.1 A user-submitted photo may be selected instead if the chosen cover is low quality or other sources suggest it is not the best photo to represent the business.1
For example, a neighborhood café could use an exterior storefront image as its cover photo, while its interior, food-and-drink, and team photos remain business photos. Those business-photo categories show features customers may use when deciding whether to buy.2
Google's general Business Profile photo guidelines say photos should be JPG or PNG, between 10 KB and 5 MB, with a recommended resolution of 720 px by 720 px and a minimum resolution of 250 px by 250 px. The photo should be in focus and well lit, with no significant alterations or excessive use of filters, and should represent reality.1 These are general photo guidelines, not a separate cover-photo pixel size. Upload, pending, rejection, and missing-image workflows belong on the Google Business Profile photo troubleshooting guide, while related terms sit in the Maps Agent glossary.
Google's setup guide also lists a logo, cover photo, and general photo as separate upload choices.3
