Soft suspension

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder2 min read

“Soft suspension” is practitioner shorthand used by Grid Rankers for a Google Business Profile that stays visible and searchable while its owner or managers temporarily lose management access; Google does not use the phrase as an official appeal-status label.12

The phrase names a symptom, not the exact Google action behind it. Google documents profile restrictions, suspended or disabled profiles, account restrictions, verification and appeal states separately.234 The Google Business Profile hub covers the underlying listing, and its Google Business Profile glossary entry defines the record itself.

For example, people may still find a business on Google while the owner cannot make profile updates.1 Google says verification is needed to edit business information and interact with customers, and unverified-profile content might not appear across Google.23 A reappearing Get verified control means Google could not completely verify the business and recommends re-verification.3

For a US business, Google's appeal guidance says to confirm verification before appealing. If Google identifies a suspended or disabled profile, the appeals tool shows the moderation date, reason, policy link, appealability and decision status. The status values are Submitted, Approved, Not Approved, Can't be appealed and Eligible for appeal.2 The guide to fixing your Google Business Profile when it breaks or is suspended covers the branch-by-branch checks, while the Business Profile suspension appeal checklist covers appeal preparation.

Soft suspension does not cover every access or visibility problem. A removed profile, a restricted Google Account, a rejected edit, a content restriction and a verification failure have different documented scopes and routes.234 Google's guidance distinguishes an owner-account restriction, which removes that user's locations, from a manager-account suspension, which does not affect the locations and can restore access when the manager account is reinstated.4
